Solomon Akinlaja

Patient

My family and I are so very grateful for the many messages of friendship and support from all corners of Apollo Hospitals and the continuous follow up on my health improvement post my kidney transplant surgery. The procedure was a great success with the Doctors (and patient) very pleased. Surgery began Friday, 26th of July about 6:30 am and lasted several hours. I was back in the Renal Transplant Intensive Care Unit (RTICU) by 2 pm the same day. I am a testimony to the fact that this is a professional and comfortable Hospital to get this Surgery done because of the excellent medical care I received.

I was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2017, a condition that came on quite suddenly and was shocking. The primary cause for my kidney disease is still a bit of a mystery. When I was 30, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. While that condition has largely been controlled for a while, it is likely that the medications I took to control my blood pressure levels, for over 10 years coupled with a severe bout of illnesses I had in early 2015 that put my kidneys in rapid decline. After my diagnosis, I was in contact with a Nephrology Doctor in my country, Nigeria. As at the 7th November 2017, I had just lost the functionality in one of my kidneys and I was placed on a very strict diet and change in lifestyle.

Having served as an exclusive Media Consultant for several religious entities, I chose to keep the news of this condition to a very small circle. Other than close friends and family, only a handful of colleagues and church folks, as well as community stakeholders, were aware. I wanted to keep the focus on the Consulting Gig and not how my internal plumbing was functioning.

Fortunately, thanks to advancements in Dialysis Centres and Hospitals, I was able to get treatment three times a week.During the period between my kidney failure and transplant, my life was never in danger and my activities were only moderately limited.

I was further aided by a "village" of people who made my ability to deal with my kidney condition possible. My wife, my parents, my family and friends, the Christian Community, and close friends especially my Campaign Manager, as well as several Church Leaders, the attentive medical care from Life Support Medical Center which handled my diagnosis as well as provided all my pre-transplant care after I left disappointedly from St Nicholas Hospital.

My primary care Doctors in Lagos, Nigeria, who continually monitored my condition, and certainly, the excellent team of Doctors and Nurses at the Apollo Hospitals Ahmedabad, which performed the transplant operation.

Especially, Dr. Manoj Gumber and the Renal Transplant Team, who after the transplant made sure I didn't leave the Hospital, State or Country till I was fully fit and Healthy.

From the uncertainty of securing a medical visa in my home country Nigeria while i was in India to the pre and post transplant. Also i cannot but mention the follow ups of my post-transplant and even up till date, Dr Manoj Gumber and his

Team have been exceptionally great.

Thanks also to the Front Desk Staff, Pharmacy Staffs and Nurses in the Renal Ward, Intensive Care Unit, the Dialysis Center, the Nutritionist assigned to the Renal Ward, the friendly Security guards, and the cleaners who made the environment clean and spotless.

I say a "Big Thank You" to the dedicated Team of Professional Doctors and Nurses at Apollo Hospitals - Ahmedabad for their personal support, care and assistance.

Needless to say, my family and I are grateful beyond words for the generosity of everyone.

While I am home and resting fairly comfortably, I still have a road to travel to normalcy. As organ rejection is a risk, the first few months will require extraordinary diligence. I will forever be on an extended medication regime and a continuous improvement on my lifestyle choices. The medical Team has told me not to resume to a heavy work schedule and avoid any heavy lifting engagement until otherwise advised.
